Survival Strategies is a provincial media arts conference organized by the Media Arts Network of Ontario (MANO) and hosted by Hamilton Artists Inc. The event will take place at multiple venues in Hamilton, Ontario from September 24–26, 2026.

About the Conference

Survival Strategies is a gathering space for Ontario media arts and media arts-inclusive organizations to discuss the impact of local, provincial and global challenges on our organizations and ourselves as arts workers.
The conference program will include talks, workshops and an informal members' assembly, which we can use to co-create practical strategies to strengthen our organizations while imagining more sustainable ways of working and creating.
We hope to model some of these ways of working by implementing accessible, intersectional and human-friendly organizing practices, which centre the experiences of arts workers who are most vulnerable to the challenges faced by our sector.
We're grateful to the members of MANO's Accessibility Caucus for their role in planning this event, and for their guidance, feedback and time.

We're excited to confirm our keynote speaker: Cyn Rozeboom, Executive Director of Tangled Art + Disability. Cyn's talk, What's Care Doing in my Contract?, will reflect on the successes, limitations, and unexpected outcomes of Tangled’s groundbreaking Care Clause.

Founded in 1975, Hamilton Artists Inc. (The Inc.) is an artist-run centre that empowers artists of all career levels to take risks with their contemporary visual arts practices and present their work in a critical context. Their exhibitions, publications, and special projects offer education and mentorship, facilitate regional and national dialogue, and encourage collaboration, conversation, and critical inquiry. Their programs are free and open to everyone.

Workers Arts & Heritage Centre
Conference welcome event
The Workers Arts and Heritage Centre (WAHC) was started over 25 years ago by an ambitious and dynamic group of labour historians, artists, and union and community activists who saw a need for a community museum that could celebrate the history of workers and labour. WAHC offers a diverse array of exhibitions, workshops, educational programs, digital projects, and community events that explore perspectives in labour history, social justice, and contemporary labour issues.

Sheraton Hamilton Hotel
MANO conference block available until August 24
MANO has arranged a block reservation for conference attendees at the Sheraton Hamilton. The block includes ten partially-accessible rooms with walk-in showers, grab bars and folding seats.
The Sheraton Hamilton Hotel is a 10 to 12-minute fast-paced walk from The Inc.
Conference rate: $255/night

Staybridge Suites Hamilton
MANO conference block available until August 24
MANO has arranged a block reservation for conference attendees at Staybridge Suites Hamilton-Downtown. The block includes five partially-accessible rooms with mobility accessible transfer showers. Please note that the hotel has one accessible room with a roll-in shower that must be reserved separately.
The Staybridge Suites Hamilton-Downtown is a 15 to 17-minute fast-paced walk from The Inc.
Conference rate: $209/night
